Politics reading group?
For those who don't want to be in Eyan's choir... There are a few people in Sanctus1 with a passing interest in politics. I wondered whether anyone fancied getting together once a month in a pub to talk about politics. Maybe we could read an article and then discuss it. Join me on the road to world domination. Or something...

We used to do that a lot down the pub but it's stopped recently... kinda miss it as I've got lots of completely unsubstantiated opinions about politics that I like to tell people :)
If someone brought a newspaper or three it would be interesting.
Kinda ties in with what has been planned for Nexus on Sunday 26th in the morning. It's a Coffee, Paper and Chat thing with a discussion at 12:00...but think that the beer option may well work for Sanctus people!
I would like to do something more structured and a little more academic than current affairs and reading the paper. I wouldn't want it to be exclusive or for people to feel that if they don't have a degree in politics they wouldn't be able to join in, but something like getting hold of a straightforward journal article, reading it beforehand and then discussing it, or having a topic to think about in advance and come prepared to discuss.
I'd be interested because, like Tony, I have lots of opinions and also have completed 90% of my plan to turn the whole world into a socialist republic.
My plan is as follows:
a) Think about turning the whole world into a socialist republic (90%),
b) Have a nice cup of hot chocolate (10%).
I wouldn't like to join if it was too academic, but I do read Private Eye and the Guardian and sometimes I throw things at the TV.
I got a call from the Lib-Dem Christian Forum North West the other week - asking if he (the rep) could come on over to Sanctus1 one night and talk politics. I told him it might not suit a partisan discussion, and that we'd probably want reps from other parties there too. He told me it wouldn't be a partisan discussion, simply a talk about faith and politics. I've yet to get back to him, and only remembered when you posted this Sarah. Perhaps he's someone we could invite to this group your setting up, or perhaps him and a rep from the Christian Socialists (I dare say Dan might be a member), and perhaps the Tory equivilant?
All it would take to turn the world into a socialist republic is to drink hot chocolate? Don't tell the socialist worker party that. Though nice hot chocolate can be hard to find. I recommend Divine hot chocolate.
Faith and politics could be an interesting start. Maybe we could talk about Israel and the Occupied Territories - Emma could talk about her experience and thoughts on it. I'd like to talk about the concept of wellbeing, about consumerism and identity, about economic growth, about feminism and gender... millions of things.
I'd like it to be something people did a bit of thinking about in advance, and maybe some preparatory research, but something very accessible and a little idealistic...
The Director of the Christian Socialist Movement has written/edited lots of interesting books on lefty Christians down the ages.
I'm not a member of CSM anymore though...
