I heart camping

Here's why.

The sound of velcro and zips
Having to wear a hat to bed
Hearing more closely the noises which walls and other sounds drown out
Walking an average of 8.5 miles a day
Getting sunburnt on an off-chance April day, and…
...the peculiar feeling of sunburn in the evening (to borrow a line)
Seeing the stars
Listening to CDs of Stephen Fry narrating Harry Potter 6
Wearing wellies
Being outside from evening to night to morning to noon to evening every day
Food shopping one day at a time
Remembering that everything tastes better eaten outdoors…
...and maybe most of all, the food - sardine sandwiches, cook ups for tea, custard and bakewell tarts, hot chocolate, bread and jam.

Not wanting to diss camping or anything but I did a lot of it when I was a child. I do still like it but...

I don't think everything does taste better when eaten outside and it's much harder to cook on a camping stove. Also, I once nearly swallowed a daddy-long-legs taht drowned itself in my cup of coffee.

You can camp and stay in one place!

I remember not being able to sleep because of fears of spiders and the sound of mice running round the outside of my tent.

And when it goes dark that's it - there's no electricity. And toilets at campsites are horrible.

I love camping because:

You wake up at 8am due to the sunlight and it feels normal

I loved playing cricket with my family - when there's seven of you you can get a pretty good game going.

You sleep in a field and wander round barefoot with a wide-open sky

There's usually a stream you can fall into...

It was the only time I got my own room!

I also love camping. My friend Darren is off to the Lake District for four months to cook for kids, and he's staying in a tent. I am v. jealous.

However, I need to take issue about wearing a hat to bed. It's much more efficient to have a decent sleeping bag and then to sleep naked because your body uses its own body heat much more efficiently than if you were swaddled in lots of clothes.

At least, that's what my mate Fil says.

I don't think that's true. It's much better to wear lots of thin layers which trap air, which then warms up.

Also, apparently, if you need to keep warm, stuffing newspaper in between your layers of clothes is an excellent way to keep warm. Please note that this is a survival rather than fashion tip.
