The sign on the leftis from ISO3864 and BS5378. It is internationally recognised and has been carefully designed and reviewed to ensure clarity and comprehension. It has been around for over 25 years.
The sign on the right is the New and Legally Required sign that all buildings in England must display from Sunday onwards (including Grade 1 Listed churches and cathedrals).
Now, you mught say "what's wrong with the new sign?". Well, on the face of it not a lot. But why has it been felt necessary to create a new sign? What was wrong with the old one? And why is it necessary for anyone displaying the current, internationally recognised sign, to remove them and replace them with the new Tony Blair recognised sign?
Incidentally, I'm not sure that I understand why smoking is the only offence that it is necessary to warn against. Where are the signs saying "No killing: it is against then law" or "No glorifying terrorism or terrorists"?
As usual, suitable comment at the Cartoon Church

Wow, the new sign is really ugly!
I suppose smoking has been legal, and even encouraged for health reasons at some times, so they want to make it quite obvious that it is now not legal. Murder, on the other hand, is not generally encouraged by the government.
I think churches should stop making a fuss about having to put up no smoking signs. I bet they all display the health and sfety at work legislation that they're supposed to, and don't make a fuss about that.
Smoking isn't the only offence that has warning signs. Dropping litter, dog fouling, skateboarding and all sorts of strange things in swimming pools are also warned against.
I like the sign on the right, the way the smoke licks in front of the red bar.
This blog is getting more grumpy and fuddy duddy by the minute.
LEGALISE EVERYTHING!
I agree with you, Eyan re: the fuddy and duddy, where are you Sunday morning lists of the weird and wonderful on the web?
Also smoking kills many more people than are murdered in the UK every year.(It also makes my job harder cos of the inconvenient "passive smoke affecting children with asthma and respiratory disease" thing) I say hoorah for the ban in public places, hoorah for the new red lickin sign and hoorah that they can't dictate what we do in our own homes!
