I think blogging's popular for a couple of reasons. It feels a bit like fifteen minutes of fame - anyone can look at your blog and know what you think - I look at other people's blogs who I don't know, though most of them aren't very interesting if you don't know the person.
It also builds community. I look at my friends' blogs to see what they are up to and comment, which can be a bit of a conversation. I see what the other people who read their blog (their friends?) have to say. And my friends look at mine and comment.
